NEW – Wedding Style Quiz

Screen Shot 2013-04-09 at 5.39.03 PMHey Ya’ll,

Earlier today, I decided to do a quick wedding style quiz! I pulled three very different wedding dress images and then posted them to my Facebook page with the following caption: If you were getting married tomorrow (go with it!), which dress would you choose?

Screen Shot 2013-04-08 at 4.44.04 PM

The results are in! According to my Facebook friends, the best choice is Dress #2. I can see why ladies would want to wear this beautiful dress by LAZARO. It has a lot of the details most bride’s dream of wearing on their special day. It’s strapless, has a fitted bodice, a full tulle skirt, and the flower details around the waist, in addition to the subtle sparkle and blush color, make it really feminine and fun.

Which dress would you chose? Let me know, and please LIKE me on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/BrianWorleyOnline) so that you can get in on all of my upcoming wedding style quizzes. Heads up, I’ll be posting another one tomorrow!

Friday Favorites: Coral and Fuchsia!

Hey Ya’ll,

TGIF! I have been living it up in Vegas, but I am ready for a relaxing weekend at home. Until then, I’m dedicating today’s post to two equally bright, fun and cheerful colors for summer: Coral and Fuchsia!

I was shopping at Target the other day and they had a ton of stylish platters and summer entertaining products in this color combo, so I knew that it was time to make this a Friday Favorite.

As you can see from the photo above, we used coral and raspberry for my business partner Jaime’s wedding. Now, five years later, this color combination is making a come back!

When looking for accent colors, ivory is a great addition to play around with and gold makes for the perfect metallic sparkle.

I love this combo because it is bold and vibrant and makes a huge impact while still remaining feminine, which is great for a summer wedding.

If you are trying to make decisions about about what flowers to use, this combination offers so many choices from the “Queen of Flowers” the peonies (pictured above), dahlias the size of a dinner plate, classic roses or orange calla lilies.

Last but not least, if you’re looking for a dessert that goes with this color combination, I highly recommend the Woman’s Day recipe that I found via Ceci New York (pictured above):

Orange-Raspberry Dreamsicle Cake

Ingredients:
2 pkg (13 oz each) coconut macaroons
3 cups (1 1/2 pt) raspberry sherbet
2 pt vanilla ice cream
3 cups (1 1/2 pt) orange sherbet

Directions:

  1. Line a 13 x 9 x 2-in. pan with foil, letting foil extend about 2 in. above pan at both ends. Lightly coat with nonstick spray.
  2. Line bottom of the pan with macaroons; press to flatten and form a layer. Freeze 20 minutes, or until firm. Meanwhile, refrigerate raspberry sherbet and 1 pt vanilla ice cream to soften slightly.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of softened sherbet and ice cream into crust, alternating flavors and packing them down as you go. Freeze 2 hours, or until firm.
  4. Repeat with orange sherbet and remaining vanilla ice cream. Freeze 30 minutes to set, then swirl surface decoratively. Freeze 6 hours, or until hard, and serve, or wrap airtight and freeze up to 2 weeks.
  5. To serve: Lift foil by ends onto cutting board; remove foil. Cut in 9 bars; cut bars in half diagonally to make wedges.

Let me know if you attempt this recipe, it sounds absolutely delicious! Thanks, Ceci.

California Coastal: Design No. 6 from My Hotel Del Coronado Photo Shoot

Hey Ya’ll,

We’re nearing the end of my wedding design series inspired by the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado. Today, I’m shining the spotlight on our beach wedding design: California Coastal!

The Hotel Del Coronado is situated on one of the most pristine beaches in Southern California so it was only fitting to take advantage of their good fortune and create a wedding that allowed guests to partake in the priceless views, experience the sand between their toes.

This design combines the beauty of the ocean with a stunning sunset.

Wildflower Linen’s Homestead Bahama Blue linen brought the softness of the water to the beach. Alternating Organic Ivory Twirl Chair Caps and Bahama Blue Chair Sleeves with Ivory and Khaki Panels and a Seashell accent were the perfect compliment to the traditional beach wedding.

We created centerpieces as organic as the the beach itself by using succulents, drift wood, coral, seashells, white hydrangea, and blue thistle. These lovely arrangements produced just the right amount of spin to give this otherwise natural reception space a current and fashionable flair.

What do you think of the beach wedding we created? Let me know in the comment section below.

Spring 2012 Trends for the Wedding Party

Yvonne Wong Photography

Hey Ya’ll,

For today’s installment of my March Wedding Series, I’m sharing my favorite trends popping up on stylish groomsmen and bridesmaids for spring 2012.

For the groomsmen, this season it’s all about skipping the black and white tuxedos and coordinating fun colors and patterns from head-to-toe instead! Personally, I feel that if the wedding is not an evening or black tie event and the guests are wearing suits for the most part, then so should the groomsmen! Not to mention, it’s a lot less wasteful to spend a little money on a suit that they can wear again, as opposed to a rented tux they’ll only get to wear once.

As men, we are limited in ways to accessorize, so go one step further in your color coordinating by mixing patterns into your look!

I’m also happy to announce that bow ties have been making a resurgence and with that comes another area to accessorize in fun colors and patterns that fit the wedding’s theme! However, the big spring trend is fun socks and shoes that allow each guy to show off their personality and style…

Ladies, don’t let the guys have all the fun! Creative bridesmaids dresses are also starting to become more popular. Bold pops of color are great for spring and summer weddings, as is selecting a shade of pink or blue for the bridesmaids to create an ombre effect is still a popular idea that is going strong.

Don’t forget, Bridesmaids come in all shapes and sizes, so I always suggest choosing a dress that comes in a few different styles so that they can each choose what they feel most beautiful in. The bride isn’t the only one who wants to feel beautiful, so do your bridesmaids! They’re standing next to the bride for the majority of the day, so they should also have the chance to look and feel stunning… especially if they are buying a dress that they will hopefully want to wear again.

Lastly, Kate and Pippa let the world know that it is now acceptable for bridesmaids to wear ivory or white… just like the bride! I think this is a very cool trend…
Remember, when deciding what your groom and wedding party will be wearing, be sure to use your wedding dress as the inspiration. Then, tie everything together using subtle accessories (for yourself, the groom and the wedding party), your table settings, wedding favors, and of course, flowers! All of these style choices combined will help to create an extraordinary experience.

March Wedding Series: It’s All About the Accessories!

Hey Ya’ll,

I’ve only got one rule when it comes to wedding day accessories: Keep it simple! Trust me, you don’t want to spend all your precious time and money picking out the perfect dress only to have it cluttered and covered up by a bunch of accessories!

First, what kind of shoes will you be wearing on your wedding day? There are millions of shoe options for brides these days from plain white slingbacks to pumps in every color of the rainbow. Heck, I’ve even seen cowboy boots, flip-flops and Converse sneakers! My advice? Think about your shoes in terms of a) your personality, b) what type of wedding you’re throwing and where it’s taking place and c) what types of activities you’ll be doing on your wedding day. If you take these things into consideration, you should be able to find the right shoe for your big day.

Whatever you wear, you’ll want to take your shoes into consideration when adding accessories to your look. Meaning, if your shoes are going to be visible (short dress) or they were selected to “make a statement”, you’ll want to go with minimal accessories. Conversely, if your shoes blend in with your dress, you have the option of adding a few more accessories.

Trend Alert: Customize your wedding shoes by adding some personality to the soles! This makes for a cute photo-op and can even be used as a creative way to incorporate your “something blue”.

Next, you’ll need to decide what you’re doing with your hair and whether you’ll wear a veil or not. If you do wear a veil, long or short, try to keep the rest of your accessories minimal. Meaning, you could add a necklace, bracelet, earrings or belt—but not all of them! Click HERE, for some elegant wedding day hair inspiration.

Finally, in terms of actual jewelry, you can never go wrong with pearls on your wedding day.
However, if your dress and veil are simple, try adding some sparkle with a beautiful pair of earrings or a bracelet.

I leave you with this gem: “When in doubt, go without!” Meaning, if you’re at all worried that something is going to be “too much”, most likely, it will be. Remember, you want all eyes on you, not your accessories. Keep it simple.

March Wedding Series: It Starts With The Dress!

Hey ya’ll,

When it comes to designing a wedding, it all starts with the dress! And for a bride looking for the perfect dress, the process can be a lot like finding a husband. Meaning, a bride will try on many dresses, but she’ll always choose the one that makes her feel most beautiful.

As a designer, I see the dress as the centerpiece of the entire wedding. I use the dress for design inspiration as well as a way to understand the personality and taste of the bride I am designing for. For example, when a bride comes to me with a picture of a poofy ballgown, I know that I am dealing with a bride that wants to be a princess on her wedding day. This type of bride typically wants something more conservative that makes a statement and is usually in love with big centerpieces and lots of bling. However, when a bride shows me a picture of a sheath dress or something a little more sexy, then I know that I will have some room to be a little more playful and the opportunity to push the envelope a little more.

Above is a picture of my sister’s wedding dress… I went to the textile show at the fabric mart in downtown LA and ordered the fabric for her myself. It came from Milan and then she had someone in Austin make her dress for her. It was so much fun choosing the fabric that created her wedding dress, which then inspired the design for her entire wedding.

Here are some dresses I found online that inspire me:

I also found this helpful silhouette guide by Brooklyn Bride, which can help you get your dress jargon down and better explain what you’re looking for:

Lastly, don’t be afraid of color! The color of a bride’s dress helps in determining the other accent colors that we will be using in the design of the wedding.  The bridesmaid dresses also help to play a secondary roll in determining the colors of the wedding, what colors the invitations will be, the flowers, the linens, etc. Some of the most stunning brides I’ve ever seen have worn ivory, cream, champagne, or beige, as opposed to a traditional, stark white gown. As of late, it also seems like a lot more brides have embraced the idea of wearing a gown in pale pink or blush (see below). My advice: Try on dresses based on the silhouette and fit—not the color.

As far as wedding dress designers go, I love Monique Lhuillier for her creative styling and timeless designs that are true works of art. Plus, I pass by her store on La Cienega almost daily and I always find incredible inspiration from her window displays and use those to help me expand the design ideas I use when designing an event or wedding.

I think that Vera Wang is a master of creating beautiful gowns that are nothing but elegant and classy. Her designs are tasteful and I love when I get to use one of her dresses to create a stunning wedding. In fact, my cousin is getting married in July and wearing Vera Wang and just the thought of her wedding dress has given me so much inspiration to be creative.

Reem Acra is another one of my top picks for wedding dress designers. Reem Acra’s designs are eclectic and dramatic, and I love the way they style a bride for a photo shoot in a Reem Acra dress. They always look so bold and powerful.

Lazaro also tops my list. His dresses are carefully extravagant while giving a vintage nod through the use of floral embellishment and embroidery.

Who’s your favorite wedding dress designer? Let me know in the comment section below.

I hope this post was helpful for any of you searching for your perfect dress. Remember, you had to kiss a lot of frogs before you found your prince… and unfortunately, the same thing goes for finding your dream dress! Try not to compromise and have faith in your vision. I know you’ll find what you’re looking for!
