My Top Five Tips for Creating Stunning Tablescapes!

Hey Ya’ll,

When it comes to creating stunning tablescapes, I always try to focus on five key elements to ensure that my designs are as extraordinary as the event.

First, remember to keep your centerpieces either very low or very high. I like to either use items that are no taller than twelve inches, or create taller centerpieces using a thin or transparent base, so that your guests can see each other while seated.

Typically, guests are seated next to someone they already know or came with, so help keep the conversation flowing throughout the evening by giving everyone at the table an opportunity to meet their table-mates. This makes for a much more fun evening than one where flowers are blocking your view and ability to socialize. Remember, you’re spending a lot of time and money on your centerpieces with the hope that they will be admired by your guests, not pushed to the side so that they aren’t blocking everyone’s line of vision.

Second, when I design a wedding or event I always like to create what I call “Hills and Valleys”.  This means mixing tall arrangements that are eye level and will always be seen, with shorter arrangements that add color and texture to each table. I recommend using a combination of different varieties and styles rather than just one unified arrangement.

Variety is the spice of life and so having three different versions that share a cohesive style will make the reception look more unique and up-scale, as opposed to a corporate event where everything is often uniform.

Third, stunning tablescapes don’t always require extravagant floral arrangements as the centerpiece. Try using potted plants like orchids and succulents in beautiful arrangements that all of your guests can take home at the end of the evening.

This is an excellent “GREEN” option, and perfect for charity events because you can sell the arrangements at the end of the evening as an opportunity to make your money back and cover the cost of the decor.

Forth, I love incorporating lots of candles when creating a stunning and romantic tablescape.  Natural lighting is one of the best ways to create impact while keeping your budget in check. If you are spending money on beautiful table arrangements, you need to “pin spot” them to ensure that they get the pop of light they deserve. Pin spotting is when you light each table from the ceiling or from lights around the room that are focused directly on the centerpiece so that it pops! If your budget restricts having pin spots, bump up the amount of candles you are using in order to create your own natural glow to illuminate your centerpiece… if you are paying to have a centerpiece, it is important to light them so everyone sees them throughout the entire event.

Fifth, if flowers and candles are not your thing or your budget just won’t allow for them, you can still create a stunning tablescape with a little creativity!  Try building your centerpieces out of found objects or items that relate to the event in some way. A collection of giant shells, vintage books, interesting rocks, unique blown glass, feathers, or interesting uses of paper, are all great alternative tablescape materials.

You could even use edible centerpieces or build a mini “candy island” (aka candy buffet) on each table using your favorite candies with jars and scoops.

Be sure to include small to-go bags though, so you’re not left with buckets of leftover candy. Have fun with it and try to think outside of the box!

Your tables scapes are the cherry on top of the event you’re designing! Use this opportunity to create something extraordinary that will keep your guests buzzing all night. Good luck!

Mr. C Hotel Photo Shoot in Beverly Hills

Hey Ya’ll,

Today, I’m sharing a few photos from a recent photo shoot my business partner Jaime and I did for Mr. C’s Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.

We put together two distinct designs for this shoot, one for the mock-wedding ceremony outside and one for the reception inside the hotel.

For the ceremony, we went for a stripped-down, simple design, using only silver and gray Chiavari chairs and white flowers to dress up the hotel’s chic and clean, outdoor space:

For the reception, we mixed light with dark and feminine with masculine, to create an elegant space filled with pops of blues and pinks!

What do you think of these designs? Let me know in the comment section below.

Check Me Out in California Brides Magazine + Creative Boutonniere Ideas Galore!

Hey Ya’ll,

I’m being featured in the premiere edition of Modern Luxury California Brides! I hope you’ll either snag a copy from your nearest newsstand (assuming you live in California!) or head to their website to check me out in the digital edition.

On page 44 of the print magazine, you’ll find my advice on using succulents for a groom’s boutonniere…

Actually, this is great advice even if you’re not considering using succulents in your groom’s boutonniere…

I always remind my clients to stick with items that are hearty and strong, that won’t easily fall off, wilt, break or crumble, because on your wedding day, the groom is the one who will likely receive a hug from almost everyone in attendance! That’s a lot for any flower to live up to!

Who needs flowers or plants when you can make these awesome super hero boutonnieres! Image via jaggerphotographyblog.com

With that said, here are a few more ideas for boutonnieres to get your creative juices flowing…

How to Pick Your Wedding Flowers

via stylemepretty.com

Hey Ya’ll,

I’ve helped countless couples select flowers for their wedding, so today I thought I’d offer some tips on what to look for when picking the perfect blooms…

I say it all the time, the wedding dress is the centerpiece of a wedding. But the flowers are the secondary centerpiece, especially when your guests are sitting at a table with them blooming in their faces. Everyone has their own ideas on how to choose the flowers for a wedding and I have some as well!
The time of year you get married will help to determine what types of flowers will be in season and what colors you should use. Roses and orchids are available year-round. Calla lilies and tulips bloom during the winter and spring. Hydrangea are in season during the summer and fall. And the ever popular peonies only bless us with their beauty during the spring. If there is a must have flower on your list, make sure to get married when that flower is in full bloom.
Another thing to keep in mind is supply and demand. When particular flowers are in full bloom, you can get a much better deal. This will help your budget as flowers are much more abundant during the season they are grown. I guess this is one of the reasons they say June is wedding season!
When I am designing a wedding, there are a few areas of consideration that I use to determine the colors of the wedding. The wedding dress and the bridesmaid dresses are a huge factor, but I love to design a wedding using colors from opposite ends of the color spectrum. I like to have fun with color and the flowers play a huge part in how that is accomplished.
I once designed a wedding that took place at a stunning mansion made entirely of stone. We chose turquoise and orange as the signature colors and every time I mentioned to someone that we were going to use those two colors together, their eyes widened and their nose curled up. I will be the first to tell you that the wedding was stunning (see photos above and below). The vibrant colors were electric against the stone walls of the mansion. Without lighting, we had to punch up the color palette and use it as the spotlight for the centerpieces. Neutral colors can fade away during the day and get lost in the beauty of the location. With the stone walls, I wanted to design something that popped!
Once your wedding date is chosen, then the fun begins and there are so many ways you can incorporate flowers into the wedding. Here are a few more guidelines to follow when designing flowers:

1. Less is more at the wedding ceremony. All of your family and friends have assembled together on your special day, so don’t distract them with too much going on.

2. Reposition the ceremony flowers and use them at the reception. This will save money and allow you to stay within your budget.

3. Make the biggest bang happen when your guests are sitting up close and personal to the centerpieces. But make sure not to block the view of the person that is sitting across from them.

4. Choose hardy flowers that will last a long period of time, especially if they will be sitting in the sun.

5. Pick flowers that will make an impact and also make you happy!
