Halloween Costumes Now and Then… Yikes.

Hey Ya’ll,

Happy Halloween! I read an article in the Huffington Post the other day and it had me cracking up over all of the crazy things some people will let their kids wear on Halloween… Who knew a pumpkin could even BE sexy?!?!

It seems that when it comes to kids costumes, they’ve gone from silly to sexy over the last couple of decades. Click HERE for the full story and to see the hilarious slideshow showing the evolution of kids Halloween garb then and now.

What are your kids being for Halloween this year? Let me know in the comment section below.

Here are a couple of my own personal vintage Halloween pics (guess which one is me in the bottom photo!):

Simple DIY Halloween Decor Projects to Make With Your Kids!

Hey ya’ll,

Halloween is almost here! So today, I’m featuring four simple DIY décor projects you can do with your kids that will leave your home or yard super spooky for party guests or trick-or-treaters.

Project #1: Ghostly Walkway

Put that collection of milk jugs in your recycling bin to good use by creating this lovely ghost-lit walkway!

Directions

  1. For this project, you need several milk jugs, some black construction paper or a black Sharpie and enough artificial candles to fill the jugs. (You can also use white twinkle lights!.
  2. Wash and dry each milk jug.
  3. Once dry, use a knife to cut a small hole in the bottom of each jug.
  4. Make ghost faces for each jug by cutting out a pair of eyes, a nose, and a mouth from the black construction paper.
  5. Turn the jug so that the handle faces the back. Glue the faces onto the front of the jug and place an artificial candle inside.
  6. Line the jugs along your walkway and turn the candles on. The jugs light up, illuminating the faces.

Pro Tip: You can also use white Christmas lights to light up the ghosts. Simply line the ghosts along the pathway, and insert a handful of the string lights inside each jug by cutting a hole in the back.

Project #2: Mad-Scientist Jars

Gather up your old canning jars and convert a table into a mad scientist’s lab. As for what to put inside each jar, use your imagination and then top it off with some water and different shades of food coloring. Look online for plastic fingers, eyeballs, and other body parts to fill your specimen jars. Make the jars and the rest of your decor seem even creepier by adding some glow sticks! Turn off overhead lights or switch them out with colored light bulbs, to increase the creepiness factor in your home.

Directions

  1. Collect a few glass jars in different sizes, such as mason jars, spaghetti jars, or old baby food containers.
  2. Find an object to place in each jar. For example, you could pop the head off an old Barbie doll and stick it inside one of the jars. Gummy worms are also a great option!
  3. Last, fill the jar with water and drop in two drops of food coloring.

Pro Tip: Around the Halloween season, craft stores sell small, plastic party favors. These party favors, including miniature skeletons, eyeballs, and severed limbs, all work well in specimen jars.

Project #3: Massive Lawn Spider

Spiders fit right into a spooky Halloween theme. You can transform a few black trash bags into a giant spider that fits on your front porch, or up in a tree. You can also make multiple giant spiders and cluster them across the front and sides of your home.

Directions

  1. You need nine black trash bags and stuffing such as newspaper, left over packing materials, or even leaves.
  2. Fill one trash bag with stuffing and tie it closed to create the spider’s body.
  3. Hold the second trash bag on its side and fill the length with stuffing.
  4. Wrap the empty bag around the stuffing several times, so that it looks like a spider’s arm, and secure it with a tie. Repeat this for the other seven legs.
  5. Use a glue gun to secure the legs to the body.

Pro Tip: You can cut off the bottom of red Solo cups and then glue them onto the body to make eyes. Use as many as you want!

Project #4: Vampire Pumpkins

I first saw this project on MarthaStewart.com, but then I found a fellow WordPress-er who attempted the project, so I decided to feature her tutorial instead. Click HERE to go to her blog, Shelter, where you’ll find step-by-step instructions on how to turn cute miniature pumpkins into blood-thirsty vampires with beady red-eyes and a mouth full of fangs!

Here’s how mine came out: This project was fun, cheap and easy! I got my pumpkins for $1 each and purchased a 10-pack of plastic fangs for $2 at Target. When pumpkin shopping, I recommend getting a variety of sizes and colors. For the eyes, I used pearl-top long pins and painted them with a cheap bottle of red nail polish I grabbed at the drugstore. I’m still debating whether or not I should add blood to the vampires mouth and fangs… thoughts?

Let me know if you attempt any of these fun Halloween décor projects. In the meantime, what’s your favorite item to decorate with for Halloween? Candelabras? Cobwebs? Let me know in the comment section below. Happy crafting!

Remember, music sets the mood for your guests and helps establish your party’s atmosphere (i.e. dance music vs. spooky, low-volume music guests can talk over). If your party has a specific theme, then let that guide your music choices, otherwise, go for classic Halloween tunes. With a little bit of thought and research, you’re sure to end up with the perfect soundtrack to your extraordinary Halloween experience!

Olympic Party Inspiration!

Image source: Hostess with the Mostess (http://blog.hwtm.com)

Hey Ya’ll,

Are any of you totally obsessed with the 2012 Olympic games? I’ve been busy, but have managed to squeeze in some serious TV time for team USA since the games began a week ago. Do any of you have family, friends or community members competing in London? If so, let me know in the comment section below.

Today, I’m sharing a few creative ideas for throwing an Olympics inspired party. I’ve included helpful links for everything from recipes, decorations, baked goods, craft projects and even beauty tutorials, all sure to win you a gold medal in party-hosting!

Every party needs a signature drink; keep it simple by using champagne and lifesavers to represent the Olympic rings!

Get creative with dips and finger foods! I love the idea of playing around with circular dishes and colorful foods to once again mimic the Olympic rings. You can even add a bread bowl, like this example from The Sweetest Occasion blog:

Once you get the party going with a few snacks, why not get into the Olympic spirit by making your own torches! Click HERE for an easy how-to from the Hoosier Homemade blog. Or, make it a ladies night with THIS fun Olympics inspired nail tutorial from SheKnows.com:

You could even have your guests try their hand at making these cute salt dough medals:

If these activities don’t float your boat, BuzzFeed is currently featuring a bunch more Olympics inspired DIY projects HERE.

Last but not least, don’t forget the sweets! Olympic coverage goes into the wee-hours of the night, so sugar is a must in my book.

Cupcakes and sheet cakes are the perfect canvas to show off your patriotism and love of the games…

Don’t be afraid to play around with non-traditional cake shapes and presentation.

I hope these ideas inspire you to host an Olympics inspired party this week. Be sure to let me know what event has been your favorite to watch thus far in the comment section below. Let the games begin!

Friday Favorites: Coral and Fuchsia!

Hey Ya’ll,

TGIF! I have been living it up in Vegas, but I am ready for a relaxing weekend at home. Until then, I’m dedicating today’s post to two equally bright, fun and cheerful colors for summer: Coral and Fuchsia!

I was shopping at Target the other day and they had a ton of stylish platters and summer entertaining products in this color combo, so I knew that it was time to make this a Friday Favorite.

As you can see from the photo above, we used coral and raspberry for my business partner Jaime’s wedding. Now, five years later, this color combination is making a come back!

When looking for accent colors, ivory is a great addition to play around with and gold makes for the perfect metallic sparkle.

Image via herecomestheblog.com

I love this combo because it is bold and vibrant and makes a huge impact while still remaining feminine, which is great for a summer wedding.

If you are trying to make decisions about about what flowers to use, this combination offers so many choices from the “Queen of Flowers” the peonies (pictured above), dahlias the size of a dinner plate, classic roses or orange calla lilies.

Last but not least, if you’re looking for a dessert that goes with this color combination, I highly recommend the Woman’s Day recipe that I found via Ceci New York (pictured above):

Orange-Raspberry Dreamsicle Cake

Ingredients:
2 pkg (13 oz each) coconut macaroons
3 cups (1 1/2 pt) raspberry sherbet
2 pt vanilla ice cream
3 cups (1 1/2 pt) orange sherbet

Directions:

  1. Line a 13 x 9 x 2-in. pan with foil, letting foil extend about 2 in. above pan at both ends. Lightly coat with nonstick spray.
  2. Line bottom of the pan with macaroons; press to flatten and form a layer. Freeze 20 minutes, or until firm. Meanwhile, refrigerate raspberry sherbet and 1 pt vanilla ice cream to soften slightly.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of softened sherbet and ice cream into crust, alternating flavors and packing them down as you go. Freeze 2 hours, or until firm.
  4. Repeat with orange sherbet and remaining vanilla ice cream. Freeze 30 minutes to set, then swirl surface decoratively. Freeze 6 hours, or until hard, and serve, or wrap airtight and freeze up to 2 weeks.
  5. To serve: Lift foil by ends onto cutting board; remove foil. Cut in 9 bars; cut bars in half diagonally to make wedges.

Let me know if you attempt this recipe, it sounds absolutely delicious! Thanks, Ceci.

Friday Favorites: Blue Topaz and Truffle!

blue topaz and truffle

Hey Ya’ll,

For today’s Friday Fav, I chose a lovely palette of blue topaz and truffle!

Images via justwenderful.blogspot.com

Simply add some light pink for spring, white for a summer feel, a deep merlot for the fall, or silver for winter, and you can throw a wedding using these two basic colors all year round!

Both colors are neutral, earthy, and crisp while maintaining a rich elegant combination.

They can also be accented with a splash of bright colors like yellow or orange for a bold contrast to the calming hues of brown and blue.

This combo works perfectly for a beach wedding because it compliments the natural surroundings.

Geometric Pop: Design No. 5 from My Hotel Del Coronado Photo Shoot

Hey Ya’ll,

I’m back with another fabulous design from our Hotel Del Coronado photo shoot!

La Tavola’s Deco Robin’s Egg linen is fresh, young and vibrant, so it was the perfect juxtaposition against the Pacific Ocean’s landscape and the historic architecture of the Hotel Del Coronado.

The modern and simple lines accented in graphic and effervescent blue, citron green and coral are inspired by summer’s ripest fruits like limes, papaya, oranges, melons and the cooling, yet refreshing color of ice.

This wedding will make you smile, maybe even giggle while you take in the long robins egg blue boxes full of colorful mounds of floral texture as they cascade down the glass top tables and are flanked by lime green Chesterfield couches. It creates a whisper among the guests and can stand alone without the assistance of lighting to make the colors pop.

Sunbeams danced off of the whimsical bold colors under the pulsating sun. All in all, I think this wedding makes a statement and sets a trend all its own… it’s pure geometric pop!

Eclectic Romance: Design No.3 from My Hotel Del Coronado Photo Shoot

Hey Ya’ll,

A wedding is all about romance and when combined with the magic of somewhere exotic, the end result is Eclectic Romance. Here’s a look at my wedding design for the Empress Room at the Hotel Del Coronado

La Tavola’s Paisley Cypress Linen with its muted chestnut and vibrant aqua was the inspiration behind my design for this wedding.

We incorporated the tall wrought iron candelabras with these beautiful flowers to create a romantic centerpiece for each table.

The mercury glass votives, amber and aqua crystals and peacock feathers, added the eclectic finishing touches on each table.

Using metallic items is a fantastic way to add a little sparkle to the design of a wedding and also help to bring in the last color to tie a theme together. With that said, the new must-have metallic for 2012 has to be copper. The use of mercury glass in shades of copper, copper lanterns, and copper furniture, is in high demand.

***I’ll have more on this metal of choice on Friday, so be sure to check back for my post all about copper trends to try in 2012!***

Lastly, we used video projections to create virtual wallpaper that moved around the entire ballroom, giving it some added depth, dimension and of course, ambiance!

Acrylic and Lace: Wedding Design No.1 from My Hotel Del Coronado Photo Shoot

Hey Ya’ll,

I recently posted a sneak peek of the photo shoot my YourBASH! business partner and I did at the Hotel Del Coronado, and I’m happy to announce that I now have all of the photos and videos documenting each of the eight unique looks we created for the shoot!

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be spotlighting each individual design. Today, I’m sharing photos of the “Acrylic and Lace” theme we designed for the hotel’s Carousel Room, plus, breaking the look down for you to re-create on your own... Here we go!

Wildflower Linens has created a stunning lace overlay that could easily be the foundation for one of the most sophisticated and stylish wedding dresses of 2012, so I thought what better way to represent my personal approach to designing a reception than incorporating this lace into the design.

The Anastasia Ivory lace overlay will find itself atop a Shimmer Stardust linen that dazzles the eye and gives just the right amount of pop.

Large hammered pearl vases take center stage on the table brimming with potted Phalanopsis Orchids.

Marabou boas come in every color of the rainbow, which makes them easy to incorporate into the decor of any wedding.

We also intertwined marabou boas to soften the leaves of the orchids and provide the necessary height to the tables that give you nothing but eye-candy. This presentation is not only stunning, but is also eco-friendly in that no cut flowers were used and the potted arrangements will live long after the wedding reception ends.

Clear Ghost Chairs were used rather than a traditional chiavari or ballroom chair to give a little edge to the ultra-romantic softness of the lace overlay. The chairs also reflect the light, which finishes off this chic vignette.
